Trip to Urbino - at last!

We booked a hotel in Urbino for 28th December, but couldn't go due to severe fog on the route.  They held our booking, so we were finally able to go last Saturday.

The trip took us across several ridges and valleys of the Apennines - some parts beautiful, some doomy and oppressive.

Urbino is a beautiful unspoilt medieval hilltop town.  We arrived at around 5 pm, and we were just remarking on how quiet and empty it was, when the clash of drums and blare of trumpets sounded, and the carnival procession appeared round the corner!

One particular theme was quite inspired - with walkers portraying several celebrated paintings - a real tour de force.

The town of Anghiari which we passed through along the way ...

... equipped to repel boarders!
Some of the dramatic limestone scenery as we passed through the Apennines

Our hotel is at the back left - a convent in former times

A cheery Girl with a Pearl Earring and other masterpieces ...

A suitably pensive Van Gogh
