Trip to the coast - The Cinque Terre

With the good weather continuing, and our time running out, we hopped over to the Cinque Terrefor a couple of walks and a one-night stay.  The Cinque terre - the Five Towns - are situated on a rugged coastline, rather like the Amalfi Coast, where the five fishing villages are linked by the rail line running north to Milan.

With its good access by rail, and interesting walks between the villages, this is a very busy place in the summer.  In February, very much less so.

Sunset over the Apuan Alps the day before

Sunset over the sea at Manarola

A very quiet street in Manarola - no bars and only one restaurant open.  Note boats in street - still winter!

Leaving Manarola next morning, looking north to the Cinque Terre coastline - on a clear day, the Alpes Maritimes in France can be seen ...

Perfect climbing conditions on the stone staircase - 1200 steps in all!

Looking back at Manarola after the climb

This yellow Oxalis was flowering everywhere along the terraces

  1. I like your comment: "Note the boats on the street". I had not noticed until you said so...

  2. Looks fabulous, we were tempted to go there on our way back home last year but it would have been mobbed in July. Plenty of exercise climbing all those steps! I'm very jealous of the blue skies and short sleeves.
